Why we care

We're passionate about the outdoors and water quality is fundamental to enjoying the outdoor space. Whether you're miles up a valley in a national park or on the water paddling a waka. So this project is near and dear to our hearts.

Helping them manage a LOT of content

Our Lakes, Our Future is a collaborative five-year national lake health project co-led by the Cawthron Institute and GNS Science. With a team of over 40 researchers and cultural experts, the project focuses on developing globally unique approaches to understanding, diagnosing, and enhancing lake health across Aotearoa New Zealand.

The project is structured around three core research areas: holistic lake health (incorporating cultural values and biodiversity), susceptibility and diagnostic assessment (evaluating vulnerability and causes of decline), and lake restoration frameworks (developing integrated decision-making tools for effective restoration).

Building on the foundation of the previous Lakes380 research project, which studied 10% of New Zealand's 3,800 lakes, a comprehensive migration of existing lake data and stories was essential during the website development.

How we've helped the project so far:

  • Developed a clean, modern site design that clearly communicates the project's three research focus areas and makes complex scientific information accessible to the public

  • Created dedicated sections for news, resources, and publications, enabling the 40+ team members to easily share their ongoing research findings and discoveries

  • Successfully migrated and integrated lake data, community stories, and researcher profiles from the Lakes380 project, ensuring continuity and comprehensive representation of New Zealand's lake research heritage
